In Japanese, 勝負（しょうぶ） means a match, contest, or deciding who wins. What’s interesting is that the word literally combines 勝 “win” with 負 “lose.” In traditional Japanese culture, 勝負 wasn’t limited to warfare. It could describe swordsmanship, sumo, board games, gambling, and even arguments. The expression 勝負を決める, “decide the outcome,” still carries the old idea of two sides competing until one comes out on top.
