Interesting Fact

During the Edo period, thousands of ordinary children attended small neighborhood schools called terakoya (寺子屋). 🏯 Many were run inside Buddhist temples or by local scholars, where students learned reading, writing, mathematics, and good manners. Unlike many countries at the time, even children from merchant and farming families often received an education, helping Japan achieve remarkably high literacy before modern public schools existed.

Memory Trick

The left side looks like an elder with a child. 👴👦 The right side is a teacher's pointing stick. 📏 Grandpa uses the stick to teach the child something important. That's 教.
