In Japanese, 術 can sometimes refer to a mysterious method, trick, or supernatural art. This is why words such as 魔術（まじゅつ）, “magic,” and 呪術（じゅじゅつ）, “sorcery/ritual magic,” contain it. Historically, 術 could refer broadly to specialized methods or arts, so the boundary between practical skill, ritual practice, and mysterious technique was not always as sharp as it is in modern English.
