At first, “resign,” “decline,” and “word” seem like completely unrelated meanings. But Japanese connects them through 辞 because words can be used to express a refusal or formally step away from something. For example, 辞書 (じしょ) means “dictionary,” while 辞める (やめる) means “to quit,” and 辞退 (じたい) means “to decline/refuse.” The character therefore appears in both language-related vocabulary and expressions involving politely saying “no” or stepping down.
