🏝️ For centuries, people who angered the emperor or shogun were banished to remote islands such as Sado Island. Far from family and political life, exile was considered a punishment almost as severe as imprisonment. Ironically, Sado later became home to famous artists, monks, and playwrights who shaped Japanese culture from one of its most distant islands.
