Collect, Obtain, Income
おさ.める (osa-meru), おさ.まる (osa-maru)
Interesting Fact
The idea behind 収 has an old agricultural connection. A harvest is not simply “grown”—it must eventually be gathered and brought in. This is reflected in words such as 収穫(しゅうかく), meaning “harvest.” The same kanji later developed broader meanings such as collecting money, gathering information, and obtaining something. A farmer bringing crops into storage and a company collecting revenue may seem unrelated, but Japanese connects them through the same basic idea: bringing something together and taking it in.
Memory Trick
“🌾The HARVEST was COLLECTED by my HAND (又) with a SICKLE! 🌾🔪” — 収 = COLLECT / OBTAIN
